"Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit."
Who said that? Not me for sure, but I wish it was me who thought of it. However, a smart guy called Kahlil Gibran got there before any of us.
An inspirational Lebanese American artist, poet and writer, Gibran is long dead now. But since he passed away in New York City in April of 1931, his life sayings have inspired millions around the world.
His most famous book, The Prophet, features a mysterious prophet who walks the sands and imparts exquisite words of wisdom on just about every important aspect of living.
The 26 poetic essays offer sound advice on love, marriage, children, good and evil, teaching, beauty, death - and even food and drink.
And speaking of teaching, how many times have you read or heard a great quote and thought - hey that' s what I wanted to say but couldn't find the right words?
And how often have you listened to the sayings of great thinkers and speakers and said to yourself, wow that's exactly how I feel? Now I can see things so much more clearly!
Great life quotes take us to a deeper understanding of our world, other people and - most importantly - ourselves.
They endow us with greater insight for life's journey. They illuminate the darkness of ignorance, confusion and misunderstandings that hinder us from being whole.
Life sayings can help us create a more meaningful existence and sense of purpose to our lives, so that life is truly for living and loving and enjoying!
There is no happiness being a solitary human being alone on this great planet. Living in a cocoon and building a wall between yourself and humanity is not the human way.
No man (or woman) is an island, as another wise head reminded us. We are all part of the continent - the great human family!
So why limit your understanding of the world, other people and yourself, by hiding safely and smugly within your own confined mind and experience?
Venture out. Learn. Share. It's not good to live our lives and exist only in our own narrow world. No one of us has a monopoly on wisdom. But together we may find some of the answers.
It's both rewarding and fulfilling to connect with the experience and wisdom of our fellow travellers, including those passed on. That's the path to fulfilment and understanding our true purpose in life.
As another unknown but wise person declared:
"Enjoy life. There's plenty of time to be dead."
